Malaya Arevalo – HOPE Program Manager Malaya has been involved with HIV/AIDS awareness in the SF Bay Area for over 15 years as a student volunteer, Peer Educator, Health Education Specialist, Outreach Worker, HIV Testing Coordinator, and now as the HOPE Program Manager. He has been a California State Certified HIV Test Counselor since 2002 and has provided numerous HIV/AIDS education workshops around the Bay for many high-risk populations including high school age youth, LGBTQI youth, homeless youth and adults, and outpatient participants in alcohol and other drug therapy groups. Currently, he serves as a member of the Santa Clara County HIV Planning Council, and is the Chair of the Education and Awareness Committee. In 2012, he was awarded as an Asian-American Hero by Santa Clara County Supervisor Lizz Kniss.
Ethan Giang – Program Specialist As an HIV Program Specialist, Ethan works with high risk and/or at risk population to reduce their risk of contracting HIV in Santa Clara County by providing community education, individual and group level interventions, and facilitation of social groups. Ethan’s work in HIV/STI education and prevention dates back to 2006 when he was still an undergraduate at UC Berkeley, volunteering as a medic for the Men’s Health Collective at the Berkeley Free Clinic.
Mauricio Reyes – Project Coordinator Mauricio Reyes is a current student at San Jose State University majoring in Human Resource Management and a minor in Health Science. Outside of academics, he is a Peer Health Educator for SJSU’s Wellness and Health Promotion Department of the SJSU Health Center, specializing in Sexual Health. When he is not working part time, he enjoys doing volunteer HIV testing work and outreach. Upon receiving his HIV testing and counseling certification, he became one of the few bilingual counselors in the county and is also among the youngest. He has been a passionate and involved member of DeAmbiente since 2010. He is constantly bringing new ideas for projects and donating time to volunteer. His passion and enthusiasm for sexual health is demonstrated through his participation in DeAmbiente.
